Steam Cloud and more than one computer
Steam Cloud syncs Big Ambitions' save files. SaveKeeper's own safety copies are deliberately kept outside them. This page states only what we measured in testing.
What syncs, and what stays on this computer
Steam Cloud syncs the game's save files. SaveKeeper keeps its safety data outside the game's cloud-managed SaveGames folder on purpose, so the following stay on the computer where they were made, unless you copy them yourself:
- the Trash;
- snapshots;
- SaveKeeper backups, including version safety backups;
- SaveKeeper's log and its record of your answers;
- your chosen backup location, which is a setting of that computer.
So on a second computer, SaveKeeper starts its own history from scratch: its own safety backup question, its own Trash and its own snapshots. Your SaveKeeper history does not follow you from one PC to another.
What we measured
We tested SaveKeeper 0.1.0 with Steam Cloud on a Windows PC and a Mac, using a throwaway test character and letting the game exit normally each time so Steam could sync.
- Moving a save to SaveKeeper Trash on the PC removed it from Steam Cloud after the next sync. It did not come back on that PC.
- Restoring it through SaveKeeper uploaded it again, and the Mac downloaded it.
- When it was later deleted from the cloud, the copy the Mac had already downloaded stayed on the Mac during our test.
- That leftover Mac copy was not uploaded back automatically, and it did not bring the save back on the PC.
- No Steam Cloud conflict appeared at any point.
Using Steam Cloud on more than one computer
Deleting a save on one computer may leave an already-downloaded copy on another computer. In our testing, that copy remained local but was not automatically uploaded back to the first computer. SaveKeeper's Trash copy remains on the computer where the deletion was performed.
What we did not test
- What happens if someone then plays and saves that leftover copy on the other computer.
- The game's own Delete, without SaveKeeper, as a comparison.
If you play on more than one computer and want to be certain a save is gone everywhere, check each computer's Load Game list after Steam has synced.
