Known limitations
SaveKeeper 0.1.0 is careful about what it promises. These are the things it does not do, or does not cover, so nothing here comes as a surprise.
What it can protect
- The first few seconds. SaveKeeper starts a few seconds after the main menu appears (about 4.7 to 6 seconds in our testing). Anything done before that is handled by the game alone.
- Only the game's own buttons. SaveKeeper protects the Load Game buttons it intercepts. Another mod, another program, or deleting files yourself in Explorer or Finder is not covered.
- Power cuts. SaveKeeper finishes writing and checking its copies before it removes anything, but it cannot promise more than your computer's disk does if the power fails.
- Steam Cloud on more than one computer. A save deleted on one computer may stay on another that had already downloaded it. See what we measured.
How it works in 0.1.0
- Actions live in the panel. Duplicate, backups and the other save actions are in the SaveKeeper panel's Saves tab, not on each row in Load Game.
- Reopen Load Game after a restore or copy. The game's list does not refresh itself; close and reopen Load Game to see the new save.
- No whole-folder restore. A version safety backup is a standard ZIP you can restore from by hand; SaveKeeper does not restore the whole thing for you.
- English only. SaveKeeper's own windows are in English whatever language the game uses.
- UI zoom. SaveKeeper's windows scale with your screen, not with the game's UI zoom setting.
- Game build. The check before loading is made for Big Ambitions build 3682; on other builds it notes what it sees rather than stopping a load.
- Mod tooltip with many mods. With a very long list of mods with long names, the game's own mod tooltip can run off the screen. SaveKeeper adds at most three short lines to it.
Cases it refuses rather than risk
- Moving a whole character to the Trash is refused if the character's folder is on a different drive from SaveKeeper's folder, or if a file in it has a name too long for Windows to move. Nothing is deleted; SaveKeeper says why.
- New save names are checked against Windows and macOS file-name rules, but not against the characters the game's font can display. Letters, numbers and the listed punctuation are safe.
- Interrupted backups can leave a file ending in
.partial. It is never treated as a backup and is safe to delete.
Not tested
SaveKeeper 0.1.0 was validated on Windows and on macOS on Apple Silicon, with Big Ambitions build 3682. Some less common setups were reviewed but not tested directly: a case-sensitive macOS disk, a Windows account name with non-English characters, and a SaveGames folder redirected to another drive with a link. Linux is not supported.
